Watching the Olympics I see a lot of things that I wouldn't consider to be a sport. In my mind for something to be a sport there needs to be objective and direct competition. Under my definition any subjectively judged competition such as figure skating, synchronized swimming, the snow boarding half pipe, gymnastics, etc would not be considered a sport. Now I don't dispute that many of these things are very hard and require a significant amount of athleticism and training but so does ballet. Is ballet a sport? If the answer is no - explain how synchonzied swimming or rhythmic gymnastics are any different from a dance competition.

Do people take issue with this definition? And if so why?
I alwasy defined a sport as any competition of physical ability between people in a civil setting, i.e. not war. Besides, who am I to believe contrary to the great and powerful Olympic committee?
I drive my car all over the place too, and I don't consider it an atheletic endevour. I fail to see how driving faster will make is a "sport". The fact that they are fit is somewhat irrelevant, a chess player may be in great shape but he isn't an athelete.
When you take a turn at two hundred miles per hour you are subjecting your body to considerable g-force. The muscles bracing the body against these forces is what keeps the heart rate up (about at the same level you would experience running a marathon). So you are combining significant athletic skill/ability (ability to maintain a significantly heart rate for hours plus driving) with objective competition.

A "sport" can be any recreational activity that involves an element of skill, athletic or otherwise, and the performance of the participants can be measured (subjectively or objectively). For the purposes of the Olympics, subjectively-oriented sports introduce a great deal of bias and uncertainty which can cause a great deal of problems. Some people want subjective sports removed, others don't. I guess that's up to the IOC.
Professional racing is a sport. For the people that consider it not I doubt they have ever raced in any sanctioned race in their life.Professional racing is the appitimy of sport, it takes the skill of the driver and the skill and brilliance of the engineers to win in professional motor sport. Racing isn't just 'driving fast' and some forms of it can be extremely strenuous. on the body (ie. motocross, supercross) If you say it doesn't take skill to race then you are just retarded. Geez probably the highest paid athlete in the world is Michael Schumacher. The third most watched sporting event behind the Olympics and the world cup is the grand prix of Monte Carlo.
Sport is anything anyone calls a sport.
Racing cars takes a lot of endurance, a lot of physical ability. Try it sometime, if you don't believe me. Racing is definitely a sport.
Figure skating? not a sport. Barroom amusements (pool, darts, foosball, bottle darts, chasers, poker, arm-wrestling, etc) are not sports.
Anything that does not have a uniform of some kind? Not a sport.
Anything with no concept of "team" at all (other than fighting)? not a sport. This means Track is still a sport since there's teams, but something like figure skating is not a sport.
