Since November 2003 the University of Rostock will be supported by the ASSIST –"Application Services for International Students", examining all applications of foreign students for an administration fee. More information can be obtained on the website of ASSIST at http://www.uni-assist.de.
Therefore, as of May 1, 2004 all applications of foreign students have to be sent to ASSIST.
The visa for student applicants enables you to visit Germany for a period of three months in order to get informed about possible academic programmes in the country. If you would like to get an adequate overview, the university is certainly willing to send you information material by mail.
Once you have made the decision to study at the University of Rostock, please also turn to its International Office to obtain further information concerning organising your stay in Rostock (visa, accommodation, etc.). b) Applicants from the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA) interested in courses that are restricted have to apply directly via Zentralstelle für die Vergabe von Studienplätzen (ZVS; http://www.zvs.de). This includes at the University of Rostock courses such as Biology, Dentistry and Medicine.

3. A certificate (certified copy) serving as an entrance qualification for higher education in your home country as well as a German, English or French translation of it. Guest students need to present a certificate of registration of their home university or an adequate document certifying the successful completion of two academic years at their home university including a certified translation thereof. (Guest students are students of a foreign / international university who may study at the University of Rostock for one or two semesters without obtaining a degree.)
4. a document certifying sufficient German language skills (i. e. at least an A- for the advanced test of the DSH 2 - German Language Test for the Admission of International Students to a German University 2 – or TestDaF with a sufficient result for the admission to a German university or for some courses: middle-level exam ("Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung") with a grade of at least "good").
Application Deadlines
The application deadline for the winter semester at the University of Rostock is July 15 of each year (first semester and higher studies). For the summer semester, only entering higher studies, it is January 15. These deadlines are met if your application and a complete set of documents reach ASSIST in time.
In order to be able to eventually clarify open questions within the application deadlines we recommend that you send in your application to ASSIST
before June 1 for the winter term
before December 1 for the summer term.
ASSIST will then check your application and let you know about the status of your application as soon as possible. If all documents are complete and if you fulfil the conditions of admission, ASSIST will forward your application back to us (and possibly other ASSIST-Universities you applied to) for final consideration. We will then let you know if you rank high enough for your desired field of study.
If you do not yet fulfil the admission requirements, ASSIST will inform you accordingly and ask you to try and provide the missing document(s) for an eventual (re)application the coming year. You should receive information about the status of your application from ASSIST within four weeks at the latest.
At the University of Rostock freshmen may not apply for the summer semester.
Neither incomplete documentation nor documents handed in at ASSIST after the expiry of a given deadline will be considered. All photocopies must be officially witnessed. Unwitnessed photocopies or simple copies will not be recognized as valid.

Applicants whose high school diploma does not correspond to the German Abitur (certificate) must pass an entrance test for higher education before they actually start studying. They may also complete a one year preparatory course before taking this test. However, an admission to this preparatory course does not imply an admission to the university itself. First a student has to successfully complete the preparatory course and must then directly apply at the University of Rostock. Preparatory Courses at a Studienkolleg/Preparatory German language courses

The University of Rostock does not have a college (Studienkolleg). Preparatory German courses like courses for beginners, basic and intermediate courses are not offered by the University of Rostock. Please also note that the accompanying German courses offered by the Language Centre of the University of Rostock for exchange students and other enrolled students are not appropriate and not accessible for study applicants. You are welcome to ask at the International Office (auslandsamt@uni-rostock.de), which for foreign study applicants suitable German courses are offered in the Hanseatic city of Rostock.
However, you may take a DSH 2 - test that is necessary for the admission in some courses at the University of Rostock at the Language centre with a prep course for one semester and then take the required DSH 2 - test or take the DSH 2 - test extern. This DSH 2 - test is only available to accepted and registered students of the University of Rostock. If you would like to obtain further information about possible German (or other) language courses that the Language centre offers as intensive summer courses during the semester break or within the semester, please look under the term: Language Centre of the University of Rostock (http://www.sprachenzentrum.uni-rostock.de).
